Pajama Factory AIR Program hosts closing exhibition Friday, Aug. 2nd from 6-9pm

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

For one night only, both local and national artists come together to present their final works.

Please join us for the culmination of the Pajama Factory’s 8-week Artist-in-Residence program. The artists, who hail from Las Vegas, New York City, State College, Bloomsburg and our very own Williamsport, will be presenting readings and performances in PJF Community Room at the top of every hour while visual and fine artists will be on display in the Factory Works Gallery (@FactoryWorksGallery) located on the 2nd floor, Studio 9-210N.

Chosen to participate in this year’s program through a curated process, each artist was asked to provide one outreach component for the public and state what they hoped to accomplish during their time at the Factory. They have created works in mediums as varied as painting, fiber arts, printmaking, digital and new media, photography, writing and performance. They represent a diverse array of practices emblematic of the spirit the Pajama Factory Artist-in-Residence has embodied since it inception in 2009.

This year’s artists are: Rachel Cualedare, Kay Leigh Farley, Rowan Shaffer, Sigfried Aragona, Sarah Foster, Sophie Najjar, and Sheilagh Weymouth. The artists themselves will be in attendance to discuss their work. Light refreshments will be served.

We hope you’ll join us, Friday, August 2nd from 6 to 9 pm, for this final closing exhibition. To find statements regarding their work as well as biographical information, please visit the 2019 Final Exhibition page on the air.pajamafactory.net website.

WBRE/WYOU TV features Pajama Factory in ‘Beyond Baseball’ segment about Williamsport

The Pajama Factory started out in the 1880s, as a rubber company. Later on, hundreds worked here making Keds sneakers.  In the 1930s, the Weldons Pajama Company moved in. The eight-building complex would grow to become the largest pajama factory in the world.

A set is on display inside Todd Foresman’s Coffee shop on the ground floor, where he takes pride in his work.  “When you are cooking for people that you care about, you make a better meal.  It’s the same with the coffee.  I really love what I do.  I really do believe I have the best coffee in the state,” said Todd Foresman, Owner, Way Cool Beans Coffee Shop

Todd’s landlord is property owner Mark Winkelman, an architect from New York.  He’s renovating the Pajama Factory and turned part of the building into his home away from home.  “We’ve owned it for twelve years.  It’s been a continuous renovation effort.  And we will continue for many more years.  I like the slow growth, the organic growth aspect of that,” said Mark Winkelman, Owner of the Pajama Factory.

We are thrilled to announce the Pajama Factory Artists-in-Residence for this year.

KAY LEIGH FARLEY, LAS VEGAS, NV

Kay Leigh Farley is an assistant professor in the Department of Art at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She received her MFA in studio art from University of Tennessee, Knoxville and her BS in Visualization from Texas A&M University. Her work utilizes video, new media, and narrative to reveal hidden realms and communicate abstract truths. Farley has exhibited and screened work at venues including The Wrong Biennale, The Knoxville Museum of Art, and Co-Prosperity Sphere, and is in collections in the United States and Brazil.

RACHEL CUALEDARE, WILLIAMSPORT, PA

Rachel Cualedare is a poet and translator who teaches Asian humanities and writing in Central Pennsylvania. She moved to Williamsport from Philadelphia in 2017.

ROWAN SHAFFER, BLOOMSBURG, PA

Rowan Leigh Shaffer is a recent graduate of Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, where they majored in Fine Art with concentrations in Fiber and Printmaking.  Rowan’s artwork has been featured in a number of local and regional venues, such as The Gallery at the Greenly Center in Bloomsburg. Their latest show, Ceremonial Sacrilege, featured work that explored and broke the boundaries between traditional printmaking and fiber, drawing on the memories of home and the natural world that so fascinate us as children and nestling themselves on surfaces that both beckon and reject touch. Rowan is from Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and currently resides in Bloomsburg.

SARAH FOSTER, BLOOMSBURG, PA

Sarah Foster is a graduate from Bloomsburg University, with a Bachelors in Studio Art and triple minors in French, Chinese, and Art History. Her studio concentrations are in Drawing and Printmaking. Her focus lies in the waterless Lithography process, producing traditional illustrations. Her artwork has been featured in various exhibitions, including her solo show, Döchas, at the Greenly Center Gallery. She plans on returning to college to continue studying language and art. In the meantime, Sarah plans on developing a more well-rounded skill-set to work in a public studio and will further explore Waterless Lithography.

SHEILAGH WEYMOUTH, NEW YORK, NY

Sheilagh Weymouth – writer, dancer, singer, classically trained, multiple award winning actress, a 1986 graduate of the Neighborhood Playhouse School for the Theatre – is based in NYC, working in film, TV, theatre, voiceover and print. Sheilagh’s ridden camels, danced with Maasai, swum with sea turtles, has sat with mountain gorillas and men with guns, spends time with shamans, makes good medicine, and has been in love with videographer/filmmaker Cayce Crown since 1987, whom she married at NYC City Hall 12/31/2015, because she finally could. Kindness and humor chronically vie for first place on Life’s List of What’s Important.

SIGFRIED ARAGONA, WILLIAMSPORT, PA

Sigfried Aragona is a 22-year-old drag artist local to Williamsport. A self-taught drag queen, Sigfried has been practicing female impersonation through makeup, wig-styling, designing, and performing for one year as the beautiful, eccentric, Mandy Mango. Mandy pushes the boundaries of art and gender with her Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve, and Talent. Whenever she’s not gagging her audiences with sickening deathdrops, Mandy Mango is working as a sexual health nurse and clinical case manager at AIDS Resource (in a little less drag). Mandy endeavors to blend her drag artistry and nursing intellect to address health concerns and disparities within the LGBTQ+ community.

SOPHIE NAJJAR, STATE COLLEGE, PA

Sophie Najjar is an artist who lives and works in State College, Pennsylvania. She received her BFA in Drawing & Painting and BA in Geography at the Pennsylvania State University in 2017. She attended Heima Art Residency in Seydisfjordur, Iceland in Spring 2018. A lifelong resident of Central Pennsylvania, her paintings are informed by observations of this place; the fervor of Penn State football, the bleakness of gray winter slush, and the lushness of July cornfields.

Celebrate World Art Day with us!

4/15 is World Art Day – how do you want to celebrate?

World Art Day is an international celebration of the fine arts. The goal of this day, is to appreciate art in general, and to spread world-wide enthusiasm and awareness for the arts. Here are just a few easy and enjoyable ways you can celebrate:

  • Get a group of friends together and visit one our local Museums and Art galleries.
  • Get the kids involved! Teach them about the different forms of art and provide them with a hands-on way to experience the creation of artwork.
  • Purchase a piece of artwork for your home or office.
  • Wherever you go, make a conscious effort to be on the lookout for artwork. You will be amazed at how many works of art are prominently displayed, yet you walk by it everyday without noticing.

Consider Sponsoring an Artist!

World Art Day is also our Day of Giving for the Pajama Factory Artist-in-Residence Program!

Another way to celebrate World Art Day would be to sponsor an artist for the Pajama Factory Artist-in-Residence Program. We’ve raised $900 for each artist so far – only $542 remains for each of the 6 artist to be fully fund for 2019. Consider giving a gift (of any size!) on 4/15 to honor this important day.

Visit air.pajamafactory.net to make a donation and learn more about the program!
